Best Actress to Sandra Corveloni for "Linha De Passe" by Walter Salles & Daniela Thomas

Jean Reno had the honors of giving the Best Actress Award to Sandra Corveloni for her role in Linha de passe by Walter Salles & Daniela Thomas.Accepting the award on behalf of the actress, who was unable to attend the ceremony, director Walter Salles spoke first:“I am proud to be in a profession that reflects what a nation is and the canvas of cinema. I am extremely proud to have this award given to an actress who is starting in cinema and gave her all in this unforgettably collective film. Thank you so much. I think that Sandra will be very touched to receive this prize, but even more so coming from this Jury.”Daniela Thomas continued:“Thank you very much for giving this prize to Sandra. She wasn’t here because she just had a most terrible event happen in her life: she was pregnant and she lost her baby. I can’t tell you what this will mean to her. Thank you very much to the Jury. It’s an incredible prize!”During the Awards Press Conference, Daniela added, "I just taked to Sandra and I think she is feeling the same way we are; we never expected this. The whole process from beginning to end is a film that talks about things that we cherish, that we love, we believe, things about our country and the situation that we live in. And of course every filmmaker expects what he loves to be loved elsewhere. The power of her representation was always very incredible on the set, very touching. She’s an incredibly wonderful person to be around. We can’t be any happier."And Walter added, "I think that the Festival paid homage to the youngest filmmaker, who is Manoel de Oliveira. He’s 100 years old, but according to Gilles Jacob, he may be 103 years old. And now this Jury has granted a prize to a young actress who has made her first film at 45 years old. It’s very refreshing because it brings a completely new life to cinema and to cinema made in Brazil. If she was here – she’s a very sensitive person – she would have shared this prize with the other actresses from Latin American films, and one in particular, Martina Guzma in Leonera (Lion’s Den)."

Caméra d'Or : "Hunger" de Steve McQueen

NOTTINGHAM CONTEMPORARY PRESENTS REMEMBER REVOLUTION

Remember Revolution 68 at 40 1st - 31st May 2008 Exhibition, films, talks, happenings http://www.nottinghamcontemporary.org By asking people to Remember Revolution we are not mourning the death of radical political possibility. Rather we are asking how the events of ’68 inform our own forms of protest. While interest in traditional democracy is waning can the past help activate new forms of political participation? What alternatives exist to the global dominance of the ‘Neo-Liberal’ economy, whose freedoms keep two-thirds of the world’s population in poverty and threaten the survival of the planet? If power is increasingly immaterial and beyond the grasp of nation states, what strategies have been developed to counter it? Nottingham Contemporary is examining these and other questions with a season to commemorate May ’68, the month when a million people took over the streets of Paris. Italy in the 1970s, where ’68 lasted for the next ten years, is the starting point of Disobedience, a remarkable archive curated by Marco Scotini and shown for the first time in the UK. An atlas of political resistance played out around the world, the exhibition offers close-up encounters with six movements, 1977: the Italian Exit, Reclaim the Street, Disobedience East, Argentina Fabrica Social, Protesting Capitalist Globalisation and Disobedience and the Society of Control. The archive charts the relationship between recent art, film, critical media practices and political activism. “Can we retain a clear separation between intellectual production, political action and culture,” asks Scotini. Increasingly the answer is no. Artist Luca Frei has created Untitled (Interferences), a striking sculpture/design for Disobedience in Nottingham. For Frei, making art is part of public life. He explores the potential of social change by inviting involvement and creating conditions for active learning. Disobedience is complemented by a retrospective of the work of Peter Watkins, Britain’s most uncompromising political filmmaker. In collaboration with Broadway Cinema, Nottingham Contemporary will be showing many of his most important films. Pivotal conflicts, such as the Paris Commune, the Hungarian Uprising and the Battle of Culloden are restaged using amateurs. These “histories from below”, told from the perspective of the ordinary majority, are presented as events unfolding in the present tense. Culloden (1964) alludes to television reporting of the developing war in Vietnam, for instance. His films expose the way political events are framed and distorted by the mass media. We see the events of the 1871 Commune in Paris through the anachronistic television cameras of two news crews, for instance, one supporting the Versailles regime, the other the popular uprising. In The War Game, commissioned by the BBC, his astonishing realism was applied to events that could have plausibly occurred in the near future. Its depiction of nuclear war breaking out in Kent, extrapolated from the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was so shocking that the Government covertly forced the BBC to ban it, Watkins says. Watkins’ work has been a reference point for many international artists who have been developing participatory, political forms of art during the past ten years. We are highlighting this by showing The Battle of Orgreave, a pivotal event in the 1984 Miners’ strike restaged 17 years later by Turner Prize Winner Jeremy Deller and filmed by Mike Figgis. Disobedience is at ‘Beatties’, Mount Street, Nottingham, 1- 31st May, Mon-Fri 10am - 6 pm, Sat 10am - 1 pm. Closed Monday 26th May. Free. Peter Watkins Retrospective is at Broadway Cinema, Broad Street, Nottingham, Fri 30th May - Sun 1st June. For times and ticket prices see http://www.broadway.org.uk Nottingham Contemporary is currently under construction in the city’s historic Lace Market. Designed by the acclaimed architects Caruso St John, it will open to the public in spring 2009. http://www.nottinghamcontemporary.org

MASSIMILIANO CACCHIARELLI PRINCIPI

CALL FOR GALLERIES ARCO'09

ARCO2009 (February 11 - 16, 2009)
International Contemporary Art Fair in Madrid
India as ARCO Guest Country http://www.arco.ifema.es

Following the success of ARCO’08 and its restructure, which drew over 190,000 visitors to Madrid for one of Europe’s top contemporary art fairs, ARCO will continue being celebrated in halls 12, 14 and 14.1. ARCO’09, which will be held February 11-16 2009, will feature India as Guest Country and it will include the following programmes: GENERAL PROGRAMME International galleries presenting works that span the avant-gardes, modernism, contemporary classics, and the art of today. Approximately 160 galleries from over 30 countries will present painting, sculpture, installations, photography, video, new media, drawing and engraving. Galleries applying for this section will not be able to apply for participation in ARCO 40, but they will be able to apply for the other sections. ARCO 40 After the success of this new programme in the past edition, ARCO 40 will again put together galleries that represent the most contemporary of new art practices. Within an area measuring 40 square metres per gallery, ARCO 40 will exhibit projects created during the last three years by no more than three artists. This section will be placed in halls 12 and 14, together with the General Programme. Galleries applying for this section will not be able to apply for participation in the General Programme, but they will be able to apply for the other sections. SOLO PROJECTS Designed for site-specific works, this programme complements the General Program and ARCO 40, with projects of only one artist creating specific work for the fair. These solo projects will be proposed by a team of international curators, providing new insights into the global contemporary art scene. The number of selected projects will be reduced. EXPANDED BOX This programme focuses on the ongoing expansion of art practices towards new formats and contexts. e-BOX embraces current influences and tendencies surrounding the use of technology in art and accommodates works requiring a non-conventional exhibition space. e-Box encourages the wider acceptance of new media art in the art market. The selection will be made by a curatorial group. There will be two types of exhibiting settings: 1. Modular stand of 30 m2 approx. addressed to new technologies and electronic art. 2. Screen space in which there will be 4 different spaces for big format video-projections. PERFORMING ARCO ARCO'09 continues with this section addressed to galleries that wish to present visual artists proposing live art (performances). In addition to the galleries applications, a prestigious team of international curators will also present proposals and will supervise the programme. This section is aimed at galleries exploring the potential of performance as a visual art practice and provides a rare opportunity to present performance works in the context of a contemporary art fair. PANORAMA: INDIA A selection of Indian galleries and projects by Indian artists. ARCO URBANO ARCO needs to extend its contents and provide the Fair with sections to enrich it. In this case, we have created a section called ARCO URBANO, a work platform for the art made for outdoor spaces. ARCO INSTITUTIONS This programme is designed to raise awareness about public and private institutions that are committed to contemporary art, creating collections, building exhibition venues and implementing programs supporting contemporary art practices. CONTEMPORARY ART PUBLICATIONS: To encourage a thriving and broad-based, international art press, this section will provide Art Magazines and Publishers with and integrated space within the Fair, with two differentiated zones for each of the above mentioned kind of publications. The main feature of ARCO’09 is unquestionably the fair’s new location, which will greatly improve its ability to serve visitors, galleries, artists, and arts professionals alike. The fair’s new programs and sections will expand the potential for interaction between these various constituencies. Yet ARCO’s core mission remains the same—to promote and support contemporary art galleries and art practices from Spain and abroad. e-flux corp. 53 Ludlow street New York, NY 10002, USA Contact us: http://www.e-flux.com/contact Subscribe: http://www.e-flux.com/pages/subscribe Unsubscribe: http://www.e-flux.com/pages/unsubscribe?email=comunicati.email@windpress.it

No tu no, scritta in collaborazione con Dario Fo e Fiorenzo Fiorentini.

SAULE KILAITE e Picasso Strings

“Violin Performance” is a truly enjoyable show that must be seen. With more than one hundred and fifty performances, it continues to surprise and charm audiences of any age group and is increasingly requested on important and prestigious occasions.
It is based on a virtual journey through different kinds of music from all over the world: from ethnic to modern and from classical to pop music.
The musician, Saule Kilaite, creates a particular atmosphere with the audience, while its imagination and fantasy wander through fragments of poems, anecdotes and enthralling music tracks produced with sophisticated digital instruments.
The effect is that of an orchestra with virtual musicians who gently follow her harmonic notes and virtuoso violin performance.
Saule plays her violin moving around and almost dancing to the notes of famous tracks, which are nevertheless radically changed and reinterpreted thanks to her creative verve.
Her arrangements transform the melodies so as to enthral and surprise the audience.
A performance with a high emotional impact, that has the effect of making time “fly” during her concerts.
Her repertoire is continuously updated and includes a number of selected music tracks prepared in recording studios, where Saule cuts various musical parts in order to set up a personal orchestra.
With the use of digital instruments, she achieves that deepness of sound that is necessary to create atmospheres with a high emotional impact; this also enables her to play over pre-recorded sounds from her own violin.
The effect is that of a sole performer accompanied by ever different instruments.
This creative path resembles the style of other famous musicians such as Laurie Anderson and Vanessa Mae.
Her sound research and the peculiarity of this technique make her one of the few violinists in Italy who can manage an entire concert on their own.
With her stage temperament, she is perfect for: theatre plays, cultural events, live concerts with other performers, prestigious conventions and events, varnishing days, inaugurations, disco events and entertainment, as well as religious services and spiritual events where the violin by itself fills the environment with the deepness of sacred music.
The musician's class and elegance is inspired by the famous fashion designer Roberta Scarpa, who has elected her among her testimonials.

Violinist and pianist with a classical background, brilliantly graduated in violin and piano in Kaunas (Lithuania) in 1995 and then from the Brescia Academy of Music in 1997. She has played for many orchestras in Milan and the outer city. In January 2001, she set up the Picasso Strings Project with the ambitious aim of combining various art forms; with this group, she took part in increasingly important engagements in TV shows, live pop concerts and studio recordings.
She has taken part in the recording sessions for many film soundtracks and CDs of Italian pop stars; she has also held hundreds of concerts with her quartet, with famous light-music singers and as a soloist within her new project “Violin Performance”; she has appeared in numerous television shows on the main national channels next to celebrities such as Laura Pausini, Cesare Cremonini and Lee Ryan of Blue. In 2005, Saule broadened her artistic horizon with interviews and appearances on magazine covers; she also took part as guest star in the film “Still Life”. She is currently working on a live performance project with her ethnic band.
Together with her team, she is gathering new ideas and tracks for her next CD.
At the same time, she continues to give her ever changing “Violin Performance” in prestigious Italian and European theatres.
ITALIAN VERSION

I suoi arrangiamenti in chiave POP trasformano in novità vecchie melodie. )
