Only 17 days until France’s
most prestigious festival takes place, namely the Film Festival in Cannes. This
year the festival will be held from 8 to 19 May 2018. Numerous prizes will be
given by this year’s jury that consist of 5 women and 4 men coming from 7
nationalities and 5 continents.
21 movies will be in competition at Cannes’ 71st
Film Festival to win numerous prizes such as the famous Palme d’Or, also known
as Golden Palm, which is the highest prize that can be awarded. This prize is
one of the most prestigious prizes rewarded in the film industry. The winner of
last year was The Square directed by
Swede Ruben Östlund.
Besides the Palme d’Or there are also other prizes that will be awarded the night of Saturday 19 May such as the prize for Best Actor and Best Actress.

Under the presidency of Cate Blanchett
This year
the president of the jury is the Australian actress and twofold Oscar winner
Cate Blanchett. She will be the twelfth woman who’s given the chairmanship of
the jury. According to Blanchett she has been visiting Cannes as an actress and
a producer for years now. “I have never come here to just enjoy the abundance
of movies at this prestigious festival.”, says Cate. The chairman of the
festival, Pierre Lescure, is very happy to welcome someone as Cate Blanchett at
this year’s Film Festival. He states that she will be an committed chairwoman,
a passionate woman and a generous spectator.
Jury members of 2018
Next to Cate Blanchett, there will be 4 other women chairing with her. Blanchett
chose Khadja Nin, Kristen Stewart (known from the Twilight-saga), Léa Seydoux (“La
Vie d’Adele”) and Ava DuVernay (American director and screenwriter) to join her
in the jury. The other part of the jury consist of 4 men, namely the Chinese
actor Chang Chen (“Crouching tiger, hidden dragon”),
French director Robert Guédiguian (“Marius et Jeannette”), Canadian
director Denis Villeneuve (“Blade runner 2049”) and Russian director Andrej Zvjagintsev
(“Loveless”). The women are definitely in the majority at the Film Festival of
2018.
Todos lo saben
Everybody knows in English or Todos lo saben in Spanish, directed by Asghar Farhadi, will kick of
the Film Festival on 8 May. The committee of the festival released this news a
few weeks ago. The Spanish movie Todos lo
saben takes part in the official competition. Actress Penelope Cruz and
actors Javier Bardem and Ricardo Darín are the main stars. Director Farhadi has
already won the Oscar for best non-English movie twice (in 2011 with “A
separation” and in 2016 with “The salesman”). Everyknow knows is his eight full-length film.
The prize
list of this year’s edition will be revealed during the closing ceremony on May 19.
